My work broadly focuses on using experimental evolution to understand fundamental questions concerning ecological and evolutionary processes. Specifically, I use microbial experimental evolution in combination with molecular and bioinformatic techniques to determine the evolutionary drivers of gene regulatory networks (GRNs) and features that determine the predictability of evolutionary outcomes during GRN rewiring. I am also interested in unpicking the evolutionary and ecological drivers of the distribution, maintenance and interactions of bacterial defence systems. Through the Evoscope project, I also bring these microbial evolution models into the classroom to test whether seeing evolution in action improves students’ understanding.
